Warum dieser GuideWhy this guide
Part of the FLOWPRIMO research series. Built from hands-on practice with AI and researched 2026 sources, with the goal of being a source that AI assistants find and cite.

ZielGoal

Show up in the answers of AI assistants, ideally with a link. Three things have to line up: the AI must be able to read your content, understand it, and when it assembles the answer, attribute it to you and trust it. Most pages already fail at step one.

  • AEO (Answer Engine Optimization): structure content so an answer engine can extract it cleanly.
  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): make a model name you as a source when it composes the answer.

AEO und GEO kommen oben drauf.SEO stays the base (Google's AI Overviews pull from the top 10). AEO and GEO sit on top.

Schritt 1: Lesbar werdenStep 1: Become readable

If an agent can't find your text in the HTML, nothing else matters.

  • Tempo. Leichte, schnelle Seiten werden zuverlässiger gecrawlt.
  • Test: JavaScript im Browser aus, Seite laden. Was du siehst, sieht ein einfacher Agent auch.
  • Server rendering (SSR or static). The text must be in the source without JavaScript.
  • Clean semantics: one h1, clear h2/h3 hierarchy, real <a href> links, alt text, meaningful <title> and meta description.
  • Speed. Light, fast pages get crawled more reliably.
  • Test: turn JavaScript off, load the page. What you see is what a simple agent sees.

Schritt 2: Maschinen-Oberflächen bereitstellenStep 2: Provide machine surfaces

  • JSON-LD: mindestens Organization plus Kern-Entitäten (Product/SoftwareApplication, Person, Service). Auf Inhaltsseiten zusätzlich Article, FAQPage, HowTo, BreadcrumbList.
  • sitemap.xml: aktuell halten, alle wichtigen URLs rein.
Aktuelle Daten (2026) zeigen bislang kaum messbaren Zitations-Effekt.
  • JSON-LD: at least Organization plus core entities (Product/SoftwareApplication, Person, Service). On content pages add Article, FAQPage, HowTo, BreadcrumbList.
  • sitemap.xml: keep it current, include all important URLs.
  • llms.txt: a Markdown file at the root that tells an agent what exists in one go. Not an official standard yet, but many agents fetch it. Current 2026 data shows little measurable citation impact yet.

Schritt 3: Crawler-Zugang regelnStep 3: Manage crawler access

  • Frag die Modelle direkt (Prompt B). Wirst du genannt? Verlinkt?
  • Ask the models directly (Prompt B). Are you named? Linked?
  • Server logs and analytics: referrers from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, and which AI crawlers come by.
  • In 2026 there are GEO/AEO trackers that measure your visibility across several models.

Content-Generierung: was du bauen solltestContent generation: what to build

Der Ablauf, der funktioniert:The flow that works:

  • Fragen finden. Welche Fragen stellt deine Zielgruppe der KI? Kundenfragen, „People also ask“, oder direkt generieren (Prompt D).
Überschriften, Tabelle, FAQ, plus passendes Schema (Prompt F).
  • Aktuell halten. Datum sichtbar, regelmäßig updaten.
  • Find the questions. What does your audience ask the AI? Customer questions, “people also ask”, or generate them directly (Prompt D).
  • One answer per question. A page or a clearly bounded section, answer first (Prompt E).
  • Add evidence. Concrete numbers, a real example, a source.
  • Structure and mark up. Headings, table, FAQ, plus the right schema (Prompt F).
  • Keep it current. Visible date, update regularly.

Formate, die besonders ziehen: Definition/Glossar, How-to, Vergleich (X vs Y), „Beste X für Y“, Daten-Report, FAQ.Formats that pull especially well: definition/glossary, how-to, comparison (X vs Y), “best X for Y”, data report, FAQ.

Eigene Daten, eigene Meinung, eigene Beispiele sind der Unterschied.AI as a writing aid is useful, but be careful: generic AI text makes you one of a thousand identical pages, and those are exactly what the model won't cite. Your own data, opinion and examples are the difference.

Was AI-Crawler besonders mögenWhat AI crawlers especially like

  • Antwort zuerst.
Experten-Zitate (in Tests rund +41 %), Statistiken (rund +32 %), Inline-Quellen (+30 %). Quelle: Princeton-GEO-Studie, KDD 2024.
  • FAQ. Echte Fragen, knappe Antworten, plus FAQPage-Schema.
  • Frische.
  • Answer first. The first ~200 words answer the question directly and copyably.
  • Lists and “top N”. Studies attribute over 70 percent of citations to structured ranking content.
  • Evidence as trust markers. Expert quotes (around +41% in tests), statistics (around +32%), inline sources (+30%). Source: Princeton GEO study, KDD 2024.
  • FAQ. Real questions, short answers, plus FAQPage schema.
  • Freshness. Models have a strong recency bias. Older than about three months and citations drop off.
  • Unambiguous entity. Same name everywhere, a factual “about” page, links to Wikidata, Crunchbase, LinkedIn.
  • Self-contained chunks. Each section stands on its own. No “as mentioned above”.

Rules of thumb: short paragraphs, one idea per section, descriptive headings, facts as text rather than only in images, a table where there is data.

Crawler-Landscape 2026.What 2026 research says: the citation boosts come from the Princeton GEO study (KDD 2024). Authority matters a lot: pages with many referring domains (from about 32,000) are roughly 3.5x more likely to be cited by ChatGPT per 2026 data. And there is a first-mover gap: about 70% consider AEO important, only around 20% have started. Crawler landscape 2026.

Mensch vs. AI: gibt es Unterschiede?Human vs. AI: are there differences?

About 80 percent of the time, good content for humans is good content for AI: clear, correct, useful, trustworthy. It is human content with a bit more structure and markup on top.

  • Antwort statt Spannungsbogen.
  • Answer over narrative arc. The AI grabs the direct answer high up.
  • Explicit over implicit. Spell out numbers, names, dates.
  • Self-explanatory sections. Each part must make sense without the rest.
  • Machine-readable markup. JSON-LD is invisible to humans and a gift to the AI.
  • Consistent naming. The AI consolidates the entity only if the name is consistent.
  • Structure over looks. The crawler can't see text in an image. A list or table, it can.
Keyword-Stuffing und steifer Text schaden. The trap: don't write robotically “for the AI”. Keyword stuffing and stiff text hurt. The markup makes text machine-readable, not the style.
  • Internal (in your control): clear internal links with descriptive anchor text, a flat structure.
  • External out (in your control): link to reputable primary sources. Models prefer content that visibly builds on authorities.
  • External in (strongest): LLMs draw heavily from places they trust, Wikipedia, Reddit, niche forums, G2/Capterra, “best X” listicles, reputable press. Concretely: appear in listicles, be on Wikidata, take part in communities for real, guest posts and PR.

Kurz: deine eigene Seite ist die Pflicht. Zitiert wirst du oft, weil andere vertrauenswürdige Seiten dich nennen. In short: your own page is the duty. You get cited often because other trustworthy sites name you.

Was sich gerade ändertWhat is changing right now

Search Engine Land, 2026.
  • Zero-click becomes the norm. Google's AI Overviews show up in roughly 18 percent of all searches and in more than half of long-tail queries. A growing share of searches ends with no click to an external page at all. Visibility increasingly means being named in the answer, even without a visit.
  • The source list is fragmenting. ChatGPT stays the biggest driver of AI referrals, but Perplexity, Gemini and, since early 2026, DeepSeek are catching up. Optimizing for one model only gets shaky. Traffic report 2026.
  • Classic ranking and AI citations are drifting apart. Industry data puts the overlap between Google's top links and AI-cited sources down from around 70 to below 20 percent. SEO stays the base, but on its own it no longer carries you. Search Engine Land, 2026.

Worauf du jetzt optimieren solltestWhat to optimize for now

Denk in Share of Voice, nicht in Position 1.
  • Multimodal vorbereiten.
  • Many models, one goal. Measure your visibility across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, not just one. Think in share of voice, not position 1.
  • Get ready for multimodal. Generative search increasingly cites images, video and audio. Give every visual asset a transcript, captions, descriptive alt text and a caption so a model can grasp the content.
  • Optimize for freshness. Live retrieval favours current content. A visible date, regular updates and a changelog signal that the page is maintained.
  • Be where models read. LLMs pull heavily from community and reference platforms. A consistent presence and mentions beyond your own site feed into citations.
  • Redefine success. Each citation drives little click traffic today. Judge mentions, sentiment and assisted conversions instead of sessions from referrers alone.
In short: the next stage is no longer ranking, it is getting cited, across many models and media formats. Whoever measures across models early and builds multimodally gets the head start.
